Constructed with a front panel that lifts out to reveal two interior shelves above a single drawer, all supported on four squat feet; the front panel displaying a complex and finely inlaid design of various courtiers and sages within the enclosed garden of an elaborate dwelling, framed by scrolling floral borders; the top, sides and inner drawer all decorated in simpler inlaid floral motifs. The front panel is intended to be removable and has many breaks. It has a metal pull handle. It is extensively decorated with the mother of pearl forming a village scene including people, a house, a tree, clouds and a cart drawn by a bull. The village scene is bordered by flowers and vines. One side has a flowering plant with large leaves and a butterfly. The other side has a flowering plant with narrow leaves and a butterfly. The top has two plants and a bird (?). The back is plain black and comparatively dull finished. Accession File states: "Small chest. Black lacquer with mother of pearl inlay design. Village scene on door, floral side, 2 shelves, 1 drawer.-wood split on door. Condition deteriorating, paint coming off, mother of pearl inlay discoloring." 19th century.
