The surfaces decorated with flowering vines interspersed with circular mon (crest or sigil), rendered in varying shades of gold against a black background; together with a bronzed mirror featuring a design of cranes, flowers and a tortoise. Accession File states: "Toilet box with bronze mirror circular with lid. Black lacquer ground with gold and gold nashiji (metallic flecked) design of leaves, flowers and tomoe (swirled) crest on tops and sides. Mirror bronze with silver face. Back has design of cranes, pines, flowers, and tortoise. Extensive cracks and some chips on lid where side meets tip. Mirror back and front badly tarnished." (Parentheticals added) 19th century.
