Description

Decorated to the top with a design of a large spray of spring grasses and flowers attended to by two butterflies, rendered in red, gold and silver hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and pigment) and togidashi (smooth sprinkled metal and pigment) against a solid black ground (warping; separation along one side and base seam, cracks); with storage box. Accession File states: "Lacquer box with lid. Black lacquer ground, floral design with butterflies in gold, silver and orange. Warping of box itself and lid causing cracking with right side of box beginning to separate from the base." Mid 20th Century.
