Square gilt lacquer writing case, the lid displaying a design of pine seedlings and young bamboo rendered in gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) with kirigane (metal foil) accents, repeated to the lid interior as well as to the interior trays, all set against nashiji (metallic-flecked) grounds framed by solid gilt edging and rims, an inkstone and silver chrysanthemum-form mizusashi (water container) set within fitted and recessed compartments contained in one interior tray. Accession File states: "Suzuribako. Nashiji lacquer ground with design of pine seedlings and grass in gold. Suzuri and water container (container brass flower-shaped). Condition generally good, but discoloration of small squares of gold inlaid into lacquer and slight crack evident in corner of lid." 19th Century.
