Description

The exterior decorated with sprays of autumn grasses rendered in gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) against a black ground, the interior surfaces covered in red lacquer and the lid interior inscribed with a poem in gilt lacquer sosho (japanese cursive) script. Accession File states: "Black lacquer covered box with gold floral designs on exterior. Interior is red with gold Japanese script on underside of lid. Square raised section forms base with raised edge of corresponding size on tip of lid. Price (600 ? ) on bottom -see accession file- some cracks appearing on interior of bottom." Meiji Period, circa 1900.
