Description

A small box with exterior decoration of birds beneath a pine tree, the motif extending to the sides, all executed in gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled pigment and/or metal) , takamaki-e (similar to hiramaki-e, but relief) against a silver lacquer ground, the interior compartment divided into two sections, all interior surfaces covered with a gold nashiji (a way of creating a metallic-flecked background in lacquer) ground. Accession File states: "11064- 11 SMALL METAL BOX; 2" X 1 1/2", two birds eating under tree, gold fleck inside Walter C. Eells." "Small box, 2" x 1/1/2"; lacquer, black background w/designs of birds & trees in gold. Interior divided into 2 compartments." Meiji period.
