Description

A large Japanese black lacquer Aogai inlaid document box. The lid displaying a design of phoenix within a cloud-form reserve to the center surrounded by radiating floral scrolls repeated to each corner and side of the box, the interior surfaces undecorated. Accession File states: "Black Lacquer box; inlayed with mother of pearl, floral design with phoenix. Bottom starting to crack where bottom joins sides." Meiji period.
