Description

The lid decorated with a design of chrysanthemum and paulownia sprays emerging behind stylized clouds, rendered in gold, silver and green hirmaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) with kana-gai (gold foil) accents, the red lacquered interior containing a fitted tray. Accession File states: "Red lacquer box with lid; 4" x 9" with gold, grey, green abstract floral on left side of lid. Bottom has removable panel. Condition is fair; bottom beginning to crack down center and to separate from sides." Early to mid 20th Century.
