Description

Constructed with a pair of hinged double doors to the front opening to reveal three interior red-velvet lined drawers, all fitted with silver mounts, and supported on the attached scalloped edge base; elaborately decorated to the front and two sides with complex designs of sages and young attendants in garden settings set against patterned grounds, the top displaying a simple design of abstracted birds and clouds, the door interiors featuring an inlaid plant motif and the drawer fronts covered in geometric patterning. Accession File states: "11064-35 Jewel case w/ mother of pearl inlay 7 1/2" tall by 6 1/2" wide, 3 drawers. metal latch and hinge. Jewel case w/ mother of pearl inlay on black ground in Chinese motif (Chinese figures, buildings, birds, etc.) Double doors on front, 3 drawers in interior. Metal hinges, latch & drawer pulls, drawers lined w/ red fabric." Late 19th Century.
