Description

The fan shaped stacking box with shallow fitted lid decorated to the exterior surfaces with a continuous design of epine, prunus and bamboo filled circular reserves rendered in gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) against a dark brown ground, the interior surfaces lacquered orange. Tag found in first drawer states: "Four tiered brown lacquered box probably used for food." 3 x 5 note card also found in first drawer states: "Fan-shape nested boxes (Fan-shape is very unusual)." Accession File states: "Fan-shaped nested boxes, a top, a bottom an four boxes. Various designs in gold against dark brown background." Meiji period.
