Description

The stacking box decorated to the top and all sides with a series of paulownia mon (sigils or crests) surround by scrolling vines rendered in gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and pigment) against a black ground, the edges of each section trimmed in gilt lacquer and the interior surfaces covered in rich red lacquer. Old catalogue tag found inside reads 11064-21 a-e, and a note in pencil to redesign subscripts to indicate current order #. Has own box. Goes together with WHIT-F-55. Accession File states: "4-tiered box with lid. Black lacquer ground with paulownia and scrolling vine in gold takamaki-e. Edged in gold, interior cinnabar red. (Probably incomplete set) condition generally good; crack along one side where bottom meets edge of one Appears to have been in conjunction with lacquer display stand whit-f-0055. Part of set?" 19th Century.
