Description

Intended to represent a demon or fierce guardian figure, the small red and black lacquer reproduction mask with grotesquely exaggerated facial features executed in high relief (chips, cracks); with storage box. Accession File states: "Mask-wood with kaolin and lacquer overcoating, hemp backing. Carved in shape of barbarian/demon character, similar in style to gigaku masks (decorative copy?). Black and red. Attached by cord to wooden display board (now lose). Condition good, large chip out of left side of chin. Has own box." Mid 20th Century
