Description

Unusual lacquer decorated circular suzuri-bako , decorated with gilt and silver hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) decoration of palm fronds against the translucently lacquered kiri wood ground, the interior containing two semi-circular trays flanking a central section fitted to contain a green-glazed leaf form and an inkstone, the interior surfaces covered in a black nashiji (metallic-flecked) ground. Accession File states: "11064- 13 ROUND WRITING CASE; diameter approximately 10", bronze flowers on red." "Suzuribako round with large bronze and green flowers on red-orange lacquer background> Interior gold flecks on black ground. Contains Suzzuri (inkstone) water container in green glazed ceramic." Meiji period.
