Description

Boldly decorated to the exterior with stalks of chrysanthemums in various shades of gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) against a solid brown ground, the sides mounted with gilt copper rings for a silk tie. Accession File states: "11064- 34 3" by 9" brown and gold dispatch case. Brown background w/ brown and gold flower floral design, orange tassel Walter C. Eells." Artifact Notes state: "DISPATCH CASE" and "LACQUERED BOX FOR WRITING SUPPLIES." Note: This seems very similar to the fu(mi)-bako or boxes for letters illustrated in Boyer, Walters Art Gallery Catalogue of Japanese Lacquers in size, shape and placement of tassels (WAG 2, 3). Boxes designed to hold writing supplies often have a specific interior configuration which Whit-F-24 does not possess.
