Description

Mortar made from light grey stone with a pitted surface. The mortar is oval with a flat bottom and smooth, deep depression. The depression is 9.5 cm deep. The rim is uneven, with one side significantly lower than the other, but does not appear to have missing pieces. A crack does extend from the lowest portion of the rim. Accession File states: "6062. Mortar of stone, Indian, found twelve feet underground while grading for a railroad, Chehalis, Washington. Mrs. Stella E. (Sickler) Coffin November 3, 1930." Donor File states: "6062. Mortar of stone, Indian, found twelve feet underground while grading for a railroad, Chehalis, Washington."
