Description

Decorated to the lid with a design of a section of bamboo that continues down the sides of the box, rendered in gold hiramaki e (raised sprinkled metal and pigment) with kirigane (metal foil) accents set against a mura-nashiji (unevenly metallic-flecked) ground, the interior covered in an even red-toned nashiji (metallic-flecked) ground. Inside box was found a 3 x 5 inch index card which states: "Very fine gold-splatter lacquer box. Bamboo Pattern 11064-33." Found on top of lid was a slip of paper which states: "Inventoried 1-31-83." (see file for these paper items found with artifact). Accession File states: "Lacquer box with lid-nashiji on black ground with gold bamboo design on lid and down one end. Nashiji also on interior." 19th century.
