Description

Finely decorated to each side with an elaborate design of bamboo and prunus executed in varied shades of gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) with Aogai and kana-gai (metal foil) inlays against a dense nashiji (metallic-flecked) ground and all framed by gilt lacquer edging, the door mounted with gilt copper hinges and a lockplate, opening to reveal three interior drawers, the top mounted with a gilt-copper cloud-form handle. Accession File states: "Case with hinged front with lock (key included). Blossoming plums and bamboo motif in gold lacquer with gold and mother of pearl inlay on nashiji ground. Handle on top (metal); interior includes 3 drawers. Autumn grass motif on interior of door. Fair-Good condition, some warping of one side; some discoloration of inlay. Tarnishing of hinges and clasp evident as well as loosening of small nails." 19th century.
