Description

The painting depicts a highly stylized collage of motifs done predominantly in gray blues, greens and yellows of the Whitman's travels west. In the upper left hand corner is a long procession of covered wagons. In the lower left is a group of Native Americans enclosed in trees conducting so kind of ritual or funeral. In the center is a golden field of wheat, house, garden and Narcissa Whitman teaching a group of children. Just right of center is a ray of golden light that lights up an American settlement. In the upper right is a picture of the Senate building in the clouds and in the lower right there is a storm brewing over the mountains. The piece is signed and dated in the lower right. Sight: 96" x 130". http://nielsen.artpassions.net/, http://nielsen.artsycraftsy.com/, See final paragraphs for a discussion of The Whitman Legend: http://www.library.pitt.edu/libraries/is/enroom/illustrators/nielsen.htm
