It appears as though the black and brown leather is taken and braided around small, thin, round strips of bark, wood, or some other firm yet bendable material. Igorot is any of several related peoples inhabiting the mountains of Northwest Luzon, Philippines, or a people inhabiting the Mountain Province South of Kalinga. One of the bands is marked with a sticker that reads 4745, and another sticker that reads 5997/B240. The band with stickers is torn and what looks like possible moth damage. Original black and white color have faded and become dirty, appearing now as if gray and dark green in color. Ankle bands edged in small band of vertical lines. Accession File states: "Ankle bands of modern Chinese silk suit. Used to bind trouser legs smoothly at ankles. Woven black and white diamond design." Show less

From the handle the blade is straight and then curves up and outward. The upper 23.7 cm portion of handle is metal. The center section of the handle is made of wood with a 2.5 cm segment tapered much thinner than the rest of the wood. At the bottom of the handle is a piece of metal 7.6 cm in length. The top and bottom of this piece each have three bands of incised designs with lines, circles and diamond shapes. Though the blade and top metal piece are badly spotted with rust, the bottom metal piece has only tiny spots of rust. Display tag found with item states: "Aliwa (head-axe) from Ifugao tribe. As with all aliwas either blade or point may be used in attack. Point more frequently used to pick up head on fun after attack. Weapon well balanced despite its strange shape." Show less
