Description

The Whitman College and Northwest Archives curates materials that document the history of Whitman College and the Walla Walla region as well as rare books and other special collections housed in the Penrose Library. The archives collects, preserves, provides access to, and promotes the use of these materials for teaching, learning, and research. Description
The collection consists of images that show street scenes, buildings, harvest, landscapes, Whitman College and rural life. The Whitman Centennial and Pendleton Round-up are included. The 1931 Walla Walla flood is documented and a photograph album, sent to Washington, D.C. to document the need for the Mill Creek Project, is part of the collection. Description
The William Denison Lyman Papers consists of his diary from 1884 to 1920, a manuscript of "History of Old Walla Walla County," copies of periodicals that contain articles written by him, articles written about him by others, biographical information, and some of the writings of Horace S. Lyman, his father, about Northwest Native American folklore. These documents are a selection from the overall collection.

The specific generational scope of this collection is limited to the figures of Dorsey Syng Baker (known as D.S.), his subsequent wives, and his three sons. A small portion contains correspondence and records for Dorsey's parents-in-law, the Tibbetts. The Whitman College LGBTQ+ Oral History Project, hosted by the Whitman College and Northwest Archives and supported by the Whitman History Department, was created in 2019 in order to document and preserve the story of Whitman's LGBTQ community. The Munnick Northwest Ephemera Collection consists of promotional pamphlets featuring towns and cities in Washington and Oregon states as well as photographs of various Pacific Northwest locations, some of which were used in the production of the pamphlets.
