For the past 25 years, Ana Maria Spagna, who's been recognized by the Society for Environmental Journalists, has lived and written in Stehekin, Washington, a remote community in the North Cascades accessible only by foot, boat, or float plane. Author recently of a novel for young people (The Luckiest Scar on Earth), and several noted collections of creative nonfiction, including the acclaimed, Reclaimers, she read from her newest book Uplake: Restless Essays of Coming and Going, due out from University of Washington Press in Spring 2018. In the 2017-2018 academic year, Spagna taught at Whitman College as a Johnston Visiting Instructor of English.

Whitman welcomes Tim Stapleton to campus for the Fifty-first Sivert O. and Marjorie Allen Skotheim Lecture in History. Tim Stapleton works on the history of war and society in Africa, particularly Southern Africa. He has published ten sole-authored books, the most recent of which include A History of Genocide in Africa (2017), Warfare and Tracking in Africa, 1952-1990 (2015), and A Military History of Africa, 3 vols. (2013). He also edited an Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts (2016). He is currently working on a SSHRC-funded project on British military culture in colonial West Africa.

This talk was the keynote address at the first ever Change Now conference for students of color and underrepresented student groups in the Pacific Northwest. Alisha Agard '15, a Whitman sociology major, is now fellowship coordinator at the Seattle-based Washington Bus, a nonprofit that mobilizes young people statewide about politics and leadership. Ashley Hansack '15, a Whitman sociology-environmental studies major, is now a program associate at T.R.U.S.T South LA, a community-based effort to stabilize neighborhoods south of downtown Los Angeles.
