Small Japanese nashiji (metallic-flecked) ground lacquer octagonal box with wisteria design. Essentially of square form with trimmed corners, and fitted with shallow lid, the exterior surfaces enveloped with lavender toned wisteria blossoms extending from gold scrolling vines, all rendered in hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) technique, the interior lacquered deep red; together with a kiri wood storage box. Piece of paper found inside which reads: "Mayor of Kure City - Tedate Suzuki President of Hiroshima Medical University - Dr. Tae Shimizu President of Municipal Assembly - Shigeo Noda. Has own box with green and white ribbon tie." Accession File states: "Lacquer box with lid-irregular octagon shape. Nashiji (pear skin) lacquer ground with fine floral design in gold and pewter (morning glories?). Could be presentation box-interior has piece of paper with typed names of three men. Interior is cinnabar red." Early 20th Century.
