Decorated with leafy scrolling wines interspersed with aoi mon (sigils or crests) executed in gold hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and pigment) and kana-gai (metal foil) against a copper toned nashiji (metallic-flecked) ground, the lid with a scalloped arc to either side to accommodate the box's applied copper rings for attachment of the silk cord ties (crack to interior of lid; losses to kana-gai); together with a black lacquered kiri wood storage box. 11064-52b is the storage box. It is a black, rectangular, lacquer box with metal reinforcing plates. It has metal rings with a green cord through them. H 14.0, L 30.5, W 15.5 cm Accession File states: "11064- 52 Dispatch case w/ crest of Tokogawa Shogunate, gold spackel, leaf design, light red tassel, 10" x 3 1/4" x 2 3/4". Dispatch case w/ lid nashiji lacquer ground w/ aoi (hollyhock) and scrolling vine design in gold overlay & gold lacquer. Silver rings for orange silk tassels repeat hollyhock design. L 10" x W 3 1/4" x D 2 5/8". Condition excellent. Some gold overlay starting to separate: Has box." 19th Century.
