Simple and elegantly decorated with gilt hiramaki-e (raised sprinkled metal and/or pigment) peony mon (crest or sigil) loosely spaced on the solid black ground, the tightly fitting cover with beveled edges, lifting off to reveal the brightly hued red lacquered interior complimented by gilt rims. Accession File states: "11064-31 Large, octagonal black lacquer box. 10" high, 11" across, 3 gold flower designs on lid, red inside." 19th Century.
