Description

Carved, dark cherry bamboo container. Top, which fits like a cork, is carved in a swirl pattern. Tip of container is carved in a maze type pattern with what appear to be leaves hanging down ward from this pattern. On stick itself is Japanese writing, and an old man with a beard, long hair and robe, standing among what appears to be reeds. The box is brown with a sliding tip; Japanese writing in lid and and underside of lid. Inside box was found an elongated cloth cover for the container, brown with black and white strips. Also found within box is layer of cotton wool and a small green flower-incense, but do not know if the flower is at all connected to the container. Accession File states: "Tubular bamboo container, carved top, Japanese writing and figure of old man is carved on body of container, brown."
