Modern Dongba painting. Winter is a time to celebrate after the harvest's hard work. Bonfires dye the sky red. In the Naxi view, the best way to enjoy this wonderful time is to drink freely and to sing and dance to the heart's content. Under such romantic circumstances, young men and women will court each other with song in the quiet woods, with animals and the moon as witnesses to their love. The dongbas say "singing and dancing gives people long lives; happiness makes life beautiful."
